Besançon

The Town :

2h30 from Paris by Train, Besançon, capital of Franche Comté and first green city of France, is located in the east of France. Its 143 000 inhabitants are called « Bisontins ». The population is younger than the national average (60% are under 40 years old) and counts more women. Gastronomy is famous for its cheese production, smoked cured meats from the Haut Doubs and Haut Jura, and jurassian wine. The Climate is continental, which means cold in winter (not much snow though) and temperate in summer. Besançon was nicknamed « old spanish town » by Victor Hugo, a Bisontin, because France and Spain fought bitterly over it in the seventeenth century.

The Faculty of Medecine and University Hospital Both entities integrated the University of Franche-Comté, which was established on the 2nd of August 1287. Besançon has 23 000 students, including 3500 studying medecine.

Built in 1686, the Saint Jacques hospital became, under Louis XIV, a general hospital. The estate is closed in by a wrought iron fence fashioned by the locksmith Nicolas Chapuis in 1703 (see also the pharmacy and its collection of china from the sevententh century).

Our faculty now counts 2 hospitals : St Jacques Hospital in the centre and Jean Minjoz Hospital outside the city. The two of them gather all medical specialities

The clerkships

The externs (status of 4th to 6th year medical students) are spread out between the different services in the Saint Jacques and Minjoz depending on their course year. They attend their clerkships every morning from Monday to Friday, the hours depend upon te service (usually 8am to 12am). White coats and scrubs are provided, but each student need their own medical equipment (stethoscope, and reflex hammer) Their tasks depend upon the service they’re in. In general, students write up their observations after having examined patients, they follow medical rounds and staff meetings, file medical documents. They assist surgical operations. They are all the responsibility of the heads of department and attendings, and most often work the interns.
